The Burnt Church Road Project

The Burnt Church Road project is a road improvement project in Bluffton, South Carolina. The project involves widening Burnt Church Road from two to four lanes between Bluffton Parkway and May River Road, and adding turn lanes, sidewalks, and a multi-use path. The goal of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety in the area, as well as provide better access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

In order to complete this project, Beaufort County will likely need to exercise their power of eminent domain in order to obtain the new right of way needed for the project. Eminent domain is the power of a government or its agent to take private property for public use, with payment of compensation to the owner. It is an inherent power of the state and is necessary for the government to be able to carry out its duties, such as building roads and schools. The government can only exercise this power if it follows certain procedures, including providing just compensation to the owner of the property.
